Teaching Matters is dedicated to increasing teacher effectiveness and closing the opportunity gap of a radically unequal education system. Help us ensure that all children, especially those from under-served and historically marginalized communities, have equitable access to excellent teaching, regardless of zip code.
As a NYC math teacher with 17 years, I fully support this mission which I have seen in action. I have been part of a unique program that works with students who have been suspended from school. These students are lost in the crowd of the largest school system in the country. Whether they have little confidence in their math ability or are so far behind that they feel they can’t catch up, by the time they leave my class and are ready to return to their home school they often want to stay. In addition to math, many of my students need social/emotional support and knowing that we are there for them allows for the breaking down of barriers helping them to grow as young adults. It is truly gratifying to see that they know that they can be successful regardless of where they are currently.
As dedicated as I am to teaching, running has become an integral part of my life. I have been running since high school when I ran to improve my stamina for another passion - tennis. My love for running further developed after I met my wife, 35 years ago. Through the years, I have competed in a few races and have always dreamed of running the NYC marathon. So I’m very excited to be running this year in THE marathon with the Teaching Matters Team! And to top it off, I will be running with my two kids!! For me, it doesn’t get much better than that!!!
