Did you know that while one school district may provide nearly everything teachers need for their classrooms, another just a few minutes away may provide almost nothing, leading to a high reliance on teacher-purchased supplies? This inequality results in gaps for students across school districts. It is no secret that public school teachers reach into their own pockets often to provide their students with tools and experiences to enhance their education, but many are also expected to provide their classrooms with basic needs on top of this. We don't ask politicians to buy their own office supplies, or professional athletes to pay for their sports gear, but we force teachers to provide students with everything they need to learn all day long.

Teachers also dedicate much of their free time to learning how to keep up with the changing needs of their students and to stay on top of the growing list of required duties that get added onto our jobs. Teachers are often left trying to pour into others out of an empty cup due to this. I am excited to raise money for this charity, because Teaching Matters is dedicated to helping teachers avoid these factors that often result in us and our students surviving instead of thriving. When teachers can thrive, so can our students. Providing teachers with the proper support, especially those who work in districts that the system leaves behind, is a crucial factor in ensuring that students can have access an awesome education, no matter where they live.

Teaching Matters is dedicated to increasing teacher effectiveness and closing the opportunity gap of a radically unequal education system. Help us ensure that all children, especially those from under-served and historically marginalized communities, have equitable access to excellent teaching, regardless of zip code.
